Austin-based Walkabouts apparently kicked ass at SXSW last week in Austin, and while I don’t care much for giant corporate expositions masquerading as indie paradises, I will give a band its flowers for blowing minds no matter where they play.
This new single “Stay Out” acts as a perfect microcosm of Walkabouts’ rock expertise blended with psychedelic tendencies. They turned the echoes and reverbs on the guitars to eleven. The sound builds throughout the track, growing from a twanging and twinkling guitar intro to a rush of sound and Sam Shaffer’s growling voice urging “Stay out!”
But no matter how many times he says “Stay out”, the music will continue to draw you in. This is about as intoxicating as whatever folks were taking in the crowd at SXSW. (Then again, I don’t remember if SXSW is the festival where people get zooted. That’s Burning Man, right? Or is it both? Whatever.)
Walkabouts are Shaffer (vocals/guitars), Kyle Douglas (bass), Drew Dederer (drums), and Ryan Girard (more guitars). Do not confuse them with the Seattle group The Walkabouts, who were active from 1984 to 2015.
